RESEARCH INTERESTS

This is an exciting time to be a polar geophysicist. Large-scale climate models indicate that the Arctic is both a harbinger and an amplifier of climate change. My primary research interest is understanding the Arctic system and its role in global climate change. The central focus of my research is deceivingly simple to state: where does all the sunlight go? More precisely, how does the incident solar radiation interact with sea ice and snow? This simple statement belies the rich complexity and importance of the topic. The interaction of solar radiation with snow and sea ice is intimately interrelated with the physical and morphological properties of snow and ice and forcing from the atmosphere and ocean. Through the positive ice-albedo feedback, solar partitioning affects not only the Arctic system, but global climate as well.

SELECTED RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Over the past decade I have been involved in several major research projects. Information and results from these efforts can be accessed by clicking on the links below:

     ● Seasonal Ice Zone Network - An IPY project investigating the seasonal ice zone.

     ● Monitoring Arctic Sea Ice - An IPY project deploying autonomous sea ice mass balance buoys in the Arctic Ocean

     ● HOTRAX 05 - the Healy Oden Trans Arctic Expedition. Observations of sea ice morphology and optical properties.

     ● SHEBA - the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean. Sea ice results from a year-long field experiment conducted in the Arctic Ocean from October 1997 to October 1998.

     ● Southern GLOBEC - Sea ice physical and optical measurements made in the Marguerite Bay region of Antarctica.

     ● Arctic Coastal Ice Processes - a study conducted from 2000 through 2003 in Barrow Alaska focused towards understanding the apportioning of solar radiation over marine and terrestrial Arctic surfaces.
