Mr. Elder began working at CRREL in 1985 as a summer employee. This led to a full-time position after graduating from the University of New Hampshire in the winter of 1990. While at CRREL, he has participated in numerous projects related to sea ice, glacial ice, and snow, including:
- Four months at Ice Station Weddell in the Antarctic
- Four months over 3 years on the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2
- Three months in the Beaufort Sea at the Sea Ice Mechanics Initiative camp
- Five months at Ice Station SHEBA in the Arctic Ocean
- Three months in Barrow, Alaska, on three different projects from 1994 to the present
- Two weeks in Denver, Colorado, working on the Western Antarctic Ice Sheet deep ice core
