Environmental Sciences Providing Environmental Quality Research for Cold Regions The Environmental Sciences Branch at CRREL conducts research and development under the Army's Environmental Quality (EQ) program as well as on basic properties of sediments, soils, and permafrost under cold or freezing conditions. EQ program work includes site assessment, cleanup, land management, revegetation, and habitat protection. Basic research on geochemical, biological, ecological, hydrological, and physical processes contributes to applied work and technology demonstrations for cold-regions Army facilities, as well as for other military, federal, and state organizations. Research areas include analytical chemistry, with emphasis on methods for detecting munitions-contaminated soils and waters; cold-regions wetlands hydrology and ecology, with a focus on remediation of wetlands contaminated by environmental pollutants; environmental assessment and remediation of military firing ranges; cold-regions soil microbiology applications for phytoremediation and pathogen decontamination; revegetation, soil erosion, and land management on military training areas; and cold-regions water resources with a focus on snowmelt hydrology. |
